The Changing Fields
The Changing Fields
While the saying goes “with the changing tides..”, however in today’s agricultural context – “the changing fields” is more appropriate. Many of us have multi-generational farmers not to far in our family bloodlines, perhaps you are one. Industrialization has squashed many small family farm’s opportunities at real profit. Hemp offers a revival of the successful American family farm.
Growing Big
I have previously written about the boom in planted acres across the country and the exponential potential hemp brings to big industry. When we take all this into consideration, it becomes apparent that growing hemp in addition to, or instead of alternative agriculture, profitability increases dramatically.
I have seen fields of corn, soybean, dairy cows and even strawberries be replaced with thousands of hemp plants. Not only does hemp offer greater profit per acre, it often comes with less cost overhead. The labor looks different and equipment may need alterations, but the reward is great.
Big Changes
In addition to hemp detoxifying the soil from previous crops, it takes less water and has a shorter growth cycle than crops like corn. In ideal climates each acre of hemp could be cultivated three times per year, unlike many other field crops. This opportunity provides year-round profitability.
The type of hemp grown frequently depends on what the intended final product market is. Hemp production can vary widely depending on end products. It is extremely advisable to speak with a consultant before sowing seeds or planting clones with hopes of end of season profit.
Hemp For the Win
While the influx in available hemp biomass, CBD products, and hemp seeds is speculated to drive down prices due to availability; the hemp industry will push on into other sectors. Because hemp has the potential to produce many products we already use, in a more sustainable way – naturally demand will continue to increase as markets expand.
It has been speculated that over a million US acres has been planted in 2019. There is a potential for millions more next season. The hemp industry has the potential to become one of the biggest national industries in the country. Now is a better time than any to get your hands in the newest green rush!
