Smokeable Hemp Flower – Growing in Popularity

For generations the green fluffy buds from the cannabis plant were the only smokable flowers anyone was familiar with. Before the legal market the quality of smokable buds varied exponentially by region (and hook-up lol). From compressed slices full of seeds and stems to the quality now available legally, times have changed. But a new smokable flower has been gaining popularity across the globe. With the boom in hemp farms, growers are finding a new customer market.

Smokable Hemp Growing in Popularity

Like the cannabis plant many are familiar, the flowers become an ideal product to sell because of demand. Customer demand has been increasing for access to a smokable product. This flower is minus the high THC, so smokable hemp flower moves in for the win. Enter into the market seed strains with increased genetic work have been developed with THC levels below the Farm Bill’s maximum of 0.3% THC.

In states where there isn’t access to legal THC cannabis many chronic pain sufferers are turning to legal alternatives. Because hemp flower is generally high in CBD, a proven anti-inflammatory- these users are finding relief. In addition, users who prefer to avoid the cerebral high that THC is notorious for, are preferring the more mild relaxation effects of high CBD flower.

Can you tell the difference? Neither can they.

In just the few short years hemp has been grown legally (in certain states), the quality of smokable hemp flower has increased dramatically. There have been increased incidences where buds high in THC and those with virtually no THC are almost indistinguishable to the naked eye. There are several ongoing cases in various states where local police have intercepted “hemp” shipments. Because field tests conclude the presence of THC (an undetermined amount) many precincts have admitted they have no way to conclude whether the plant matter is hemp or cannabis.

This overlap in jurisdiction, legal access and inability to conduct proper field testing has caused much confusion in both the industry and the marketplace. However, despite the still developing hemp industry, the popularity of smokable hemp flower is still growing.

What does this mean for growers?

Each year the amount of hemp farmers increases in the US. The important thing for growers to consider before choosing the strains they want to grow is what is going to be their end product. If the desired end product is smokable flower, the methodology should be different. This is in order to obtain the highest quality and appearance for market value. Many have even begun growing these strains indoors with extremely controlled environments.

However, if the final product will be an extraction, grow method many not be as important. The level of CBD will play a factor in market value of finished products. Whereas if the grower is intending to use the plants for fiber or hurd for other products, quality of flowers and CBD levels are of nominal concern.
