From the High Chief: Legal Cannabis is Construction’s Best Friend

As a kid my earliest memories are growing up in New York on Long Island in the early and mid 80’s. I was always fascinated by the amazing skyline of Manhattan. It seemed like buildings were going up left and right and suburbs were expanding at a phenomenal rate. It seemed like business as usual. Over the last decade major construction had seemed to come to a halt. Then I showed up in Colorado in December of 2013, things were about to change.

In just over 3 years since Amendment 64 passed here I have watched a bit of a construction renaissance take place. There are no less than 50 cranes scattered across the Denver skyline presently. Monstrous undertakings that have obscene amounts of money and time involved in their success. In cities like Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Pueblo and Boulder massive suburban developments are sprouting up like weeds. There are construction projects underway all over this state and if you “swing a hammer” for a living so to speak than business is definitely good! Homeowners that bought homes for 200k in the 90’s are selling now for 750k all over Colorado. Contractors race from site to site doing bids, home renovations and competing with each other to land the deal. Landlords with strip malls riddled with for rent signs are showing their spaces to prospective small business owners who are looking to find the perfect location to set up shop. Realtors are inundated with potential buyers looking for their dream home in all parts of the state. Apartment complexes are having their leasing agents show units constantly, all while collecting that $40 application fee like it’s nobody’s business!

What has happened in Colorado has also started happening in states like Washington and Oregon. States like Maine and Massachusetts that just legalized cannabis recreationally have much to look forward to. In my home state of Massachusetts there are endless empty mills. They use to supply this great nation and the rest of the world with damn near everything. Now they look like they are about to fall down. Cities like Brockton, New Bedford, Lawrence and Holyoke are all about to get a major uplift if history repeats itself. Not to mention the cities that surround Boston within about 25 miles or so. Those cities are where the majority of cannabis will be sold in that state because of the ridiculously dense population.

If you invest in real estate Massachusetts and Maine specifically look as attractive as ever to the cannabis industry. Seeing all of the Northeast will be driving there to get their medicine in the coming years. Towns on the border like Pittsfield, Springfield, Lowell and Fall River will see the most rapid spike in my opinion. The neighboring states like NY, NH, RI and CT will flock there in hordes and happily tell their old dealer goodbye. Many of them will decide to stay simply because of the easy access and decriminalization.

No matter what the states that just legalized are all about to see more construction than usual. In some areas the effects will be profound resulting in huge boosts to the economy.
